The Ask
Update the current My ePortfolio page to include different ways to view the portfolio items. Include drag and drop functionality.
Pain Points
The portfolio doesn’t have an easy way to tell which document is linked or in use. Since there are no dividers it’s difficult to tell which option button belongs to which item.
Research
During conversations with the project manager, it became clear that an approach similar to Google Drive would be a good direction to take this project since it is a tool that is widely used by our audience.
Enhancements Made
I noticed there are different types of items that can be saved/added to the portfolio, Folders, Bookmarks, and Files. I organized these in order and gave each category I title to guide the user.
To make it clear which item is liked/in use, I added an icon to the item. I added dividers to make it easier for the user to see which Option button belonged to which item.
Similar to Google Drive I added a grid view and a list view option. Unlike Google Drive, we could not add a preview of the file in grid view. Instead, I made sure to display prominently which kind of file the listed item is.
I organized the page to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
Lessons Learned
I made sure to verbally communicate with the front end developer and the engineer my concept for the drag and drop since the application used to design this doesn’t give me the option to create a drag and drop functionality. In list view, the item roll over should only be the change of color in the underline text. When wanting to drag the item, the cursor should change to a grab hand and the item changes to a tile, the outline currently seen as rollover in the prototype.
